Work Hours:  7:30 am to 4:00 pm

Reports to: Program Administrator

Salary: $36.89 - $44.96/hour, plus benefits, depending on experience

Job Summary: Seeking mid-level professional for the design and layout of structural practices such as grassed waterways, stormwater calculations, and construction plan reviews.  Assist both rural and urban customers with questions regarding drainage improvement, pond construction, wetland restoration and streambank stabilization. The work environment is public service and not profit driven. Make a positive difference by influencing better natural resources management on Big and Little Darby Creeks, national and state scenic rivers.  The Natural Resources Engineer is responsible for providing professional engineering services related to the conservation of soil and water resources, watershed and agriculture conservation work within Madison County, Ohio.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Survey, design, layout projects, inspect during construction, and perform as-builts according to NRCS National Conservation Planning and Procedures Handbook, NRCS Standards and Specifications, and other related handbooks.
  • Assist in all phases of administering the State Pollution Abatement Program, the Environmental Quality Incentive Program and the Conservation Reserve Program.
  • Help to resolve resource management problems in variety of settings.
  • Assist land users with pond construction, wetland restoration, streambank stabilization, drainage improvement and agricultural best management practices.
  • Supervise and evaluate the day-to-day operations and workload of the urban conservationist.
  • Assist the urban conservationist in the review of proposed subdivisions, storm water management, and erosion and sediment control plans.
  • Present at field days, tours, workshops and other informational events.
  • Attend training sessions, conferences and meetings, as assigned, including occasional evenings and weekend obligations.
  • Record activities and outcomes into Beehive Timesheet.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as directed by the District Administrator

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of secondary education with a degree in civil or environmental engineering or a related course of study or any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed below.
  • This position requires considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of natural resource conservation and management.
  • Takes initiative, is dependable, and has strong motivation.
  • Goal oriented.
  • Enthusiasm for District programs.
  • Successfully pass a background check and drug test.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license and be insurable to drive County vehicles.

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Preference is given to those with an Engineer in Training designation or Professional Engineer licensure, but is not required.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:           

  • Skill in: Oral and written communication, operation of surveying and design equipment, AutoCAD**, use of maps (aerial, topographic, soils, etc.), basic photography techniques, Microsoft Office and ArcView GIS programs**, Excel spreadsheets.
  • Ability to follow governing rules, working agreements, regulations and strategic plans specific to Madison SWCD, Ohio Department of Agriculture Division of Soil & Water, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, USDA Farm Service Agency and other conservation organizations (i.e. Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio EPA, Ohio Cooperative Extension Service, and Army Corps of Engineers).

**Demonstrated experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and proficiency with AutoCAD, ArcGIS, or other related software is a must.

  • Must be able to traverse various types of terrain.

Machines/Equipment/Tools Used:

  • The use of some equipment for field work that weighs 60lbs or less
  • Office tools: printers, telephones, photocopier, etc.
